“The Cannibal Tale”

They were in a tropical island in Pacific Ocean for their summer holiday.

They were wandering the rainforest and they were admiring the animals and coconuts.

Suddenly they heard an interesting noise. They panicked for a moment. Then they saw some cannibals with wood handguns and wooden shields. The cannibals caught them and they took them in their place and they tied them on rocks before cooking them. But the man had a cell phone and he called the police.

The police called the F.B.I. and the army. Some F.B.I. men with some commando soldiers landed with a helicopter in the island. They went to the cannibals place quickly and they tried to save the people quietly. They made a plan. The F.B.I. men took the people. And the army distracted the cannibals. Finally the people were safe and nobody died.

“A Pirate treasure”

A couple, was hanging out in a beach in Crete. Then, an old man appeared. He told them that they should help him find an old treasure, that was haunted by the ghosts of a pirate ship. They started laughing with him but, after he pot out a pirate treasure map, they believed him. “We are on holidays” they said, but we never had such a great, experience! We will follow you to the treasure, but you well give us a share.

They  were waiting for the old man to come from his old house on the other side of the beach. It started getting dark and they decided to leave. But a loud noise stopped them. The old man had a ship. They got board. They arrived to an island. They followed the man into a cave. It was dark and silent. They lit a torch to see better. In the center of the cave was a pirate treasure.

They walked through some water but then a crocodile tried to eat them! But they burned it with the torch. They took the treasure, and went out to the beach. The boy, broke the lock and took what it was inside. It was an old piece of paper that said: “there is no treasure. But you have disturbed the ghosts of our ship. You are now cursed.”

The old man and the couple were never seen again.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING

 

Projects as well as poetry also stimulate children's interest and imagination. Knowing that and always being close to the children , we assigned them some projects according to the thematic modules they were taught to. Projects also promote students idependence and engourage them to express themselves better in the foreign language that they are learning.

Poetry

                                                                         POETRY
Children's imagination is very important for their progress and for being better people as well. For this reason we try to stimulate their imagination and we believe that poetry is a great way to do this. It helps them use their right hemisphere in a constructive way. Taking the opportunity from our environment lesson , I thought it  would be a great idea for them to write some poems dedicated to the environment. Here is what they came up with. The idea was motivating for them and their work was inspiring and moving. I want to thank and congratulate them for being so wonderful.

I thought i should just post these news in Greek and also wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. It was a great experience meeting all ariston schools in Thessaloniki. We promise we will keep on with the good work.

Η επιδίωξη της αριστείας στην οποία είμαστε επικεντρωμένοι μας ανταμείβει. Το φροντιστήριο μας ήταν ανάμεσα στα τρία φροντιστήρια στην Ελλάδα και το μοναδικό στην Αττική που έλαβε βραβείο αριστείας στο 1rst ariston annual review conference Greece and Cyprus που έγινε στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Είμαστε πανευτυχείς και σίγουροι ότι οι μαθητές μας, οι γονείς τους και το προσωπικό μας νιώθουν δικαιωμένοι για την επιλογή Κέντρου Ξένων Γλωσσών που έκαναν.

  I have always enjoyed literature; I even have memories from when I was a toddler feeling very fond of the written word. I have been using readers in my classes since the first day I set foot in a class as a young ELT teacher because, as you might have guessed, I find them the most inspiring source of getting to know the culture and the history of the English speaking world. They are a great source for discussion and enrichment of the second language’s vocabulary and sentence structure and complexity.

 In Ascent Languages we have been using the intensive reading method for 5 years now. We have taught everything from The Hound of the Baskervilles to The Devil Wears Prada and I can assure you that students still recall the stories and characters from books to build their own stories and express themselves in general. They bring the stories up in their own writings and use them as examples when they speak. The experience of reading classic literature and modern fiction has even enabled them to handle more academic reading with ease and write inspiring stories.

  This year, at the school, we decided to implement extensive reading. Extensive reading is reading for pleasure at a level with which you are in your comfort zone in the second language.  We thought that not everyone enjoys the same stories and extensive reading gives you the freedom to choose what you want to digest. In intensive reading there is analysis and you are usually asked to elaborate on the set text. In extensive reading you choose which books you want to read and toss aside those you find boring

  Extensive reading is helpful and fun in many ways! It helps you understand the meaning of word through context without having to use your dictionary, and familiarize yourself with complex sentence structure which of course is a fantastic way to improve in a second language.

  We decided to do it a little bit more exciting and rewarding for our students, so we ask them to draw their favourite characters or write a different ending to their story .As soon as I promised a surprise prize for those who read the most books and built a nice portfolio of some of their work it got everyone going!

This month, my Senior A class (students aged 8-10) wrote and designed a nice composition about their rooms. It is important to have young Students include drawings in their compositions as this caters for their Visual and Kinaesthetic way of learning. Since my class is primarily visual and kinaesthetic, I asked them to draw for me their room which turned out to be a lively project. I could never have imagined that I had such artists in my class which basically shows their kinaesthetic nature! I am sure I'm going to do more of this to decorate my class as well as show you on this blog. I promise this is just the beginning...more of my class' work is going to be presented soon...I hope you love it too!
